Savior on the Blood

savior on the blood st-petersburgThe Church of Christ Resurrection (The Savior on the Blood) was put up to commemorate the tsar-martyr on the site where on March 1, 1881, Grinevitsky, a member of the People's Will society, mortally wounded Emperor Alexander II.

The church was put up with the money collected all over Russia. Architecturally it revives the traditions of the 17th-century Russian church-building. The church stands out for its complicated and picturesque outline, as well as rich and multicolored decoration.

The facades are faced with glazed shaped brick and ceramic tiles as well as decorated with mosaic panels. In the decor of interiors Italian marbles and Russian semiprecious stones are used. The church is interesting as a kind of an architectural accent in classical surroundings.
Moreover, the interior is unique, boasting of the mosaic panels made in Frolovs' workshop to the originals by outstandmg Russian artists, including V. Vasnetsov, M. Nesterov, A. Riabushkin and others. This is the largest mosaic ensemble existing on the church facades and interior walls.

Summer garden and Palace

st-petersburg excursion - summer gardenThe Summer Garden and Summer Palace of Peter the Great is the famous place for getting a rest and have a walk any time a year.
Behind the beautiful wrought iron fence there is an old park that witnessed the most spectacular moments of St Petersburg's early history.

Impressed by the royal parks that he had seen in Europe, Peter the Great was very keen to have such a park in his new and beloved "paradise" - St Petersburg. In Peter's new park everything was done according to the latest fashion: all trees and bushes were trimmed in the most elaborate way, all the alleys were decorated with marble statues and fountains.

Peter the Great commissioned the first architect of the city - Domenico Trezzini - to build a small palace in the park. The palace had no heating and was intended for summer time. That's why it was called a Summer Palace, and the park became known as a Summer Garden.
This place is famous for one of the first stone buildings in Petersburg, it was made into a museum and contains material of an historical, memorial and artistic nature.

Summer Garden and Palace is open daily except Tuesdays and the last Monday of every month, from 11:00 a.m to 5:30 p.m.

Excursion's duration - 2 hours.

Kazan Cathedral

ImageThe Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan encircles a small square with a double row of beautiful columns - an impressive colonnade.
The architect Andrei Voronikhin, who built this church in 1801-1811, was greatly inspired by Basilica of St Peter's in Rome.

Kazan Cathedral was meant to be a Russian version of St Peter's and the main church of Russia. After the War of 1812 the church became a monument to the Russian victory. The famous Russian field marshal Mikhail Kutuzov was buried inside the church.

The cathedral was named after a "miracle-making" icon of Our Lady of Kazan, which the church housed till the early 1930s. The Bolsheviks closed the cathedral for services in 1929, and from 1932 it housed the collections of the Museum of History of Religion and Atheism, which displayed numerous pieces of religious art. In 1999 regular services were resumed in the cathedral, though it still shares the premises with the museum.

Excursion's duration - 1 hour
